The National Archives was opened on December 5, 1990. The course of our history of inhabitation by the Kalinago and other indigenous peoples, our colonization by the French and the British and the immigration of the African, East Indian and Portuguese people has left behind a rich historical legacy. It was deemed necessary, by the Chief Librarian at the time, Mrs. Lorna Small, to collect documents pertinent to the history of St Vincent and the Grenadines for their preservation. These documents she used in the establishment of the National Archives. Over the years, more historic documents were collected in the quest to preserve our cultural heritage.
