HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE

Situated on the outskirts of the capital Kingstown, the St. Vincent Technical College is in close proximity to the ET Joshua Airport and the St. Vincent Teachers' College. There, it has become the hub of activity for technical and vocational education and offers a full range of programmes.

The College which was built by British Development Division funds in 1971, opened its doors and embraced among others some of the nation’s less fortunate students. The enrolled students had either attained the Primary School Leaving Certificate or had dropped out the Secondary School System. This institution was intended to bridge the gap between school life and the world of work.

The staff at inception were entirely expatriates. However, in 1974 the first Vincentian Principal, Mr. Augustine V. Lewis, replaced Mr. Robert Caffrey, the British Principal who had pioneered the running of the institution.

Today the College is having to cope with the applications of successful Secondary School graduates as well. Competition for the limited places available at the College is strong as people are increasingly beginning to appreciate the value of TVET as a means to become more competitive in the job market. The new programmes, which are being offered at the College (see below) will need to meet this growing demand.
