The Lions Club Saint Vincent South has embarked on a number of projects aimed at supporting schools and promoting sustainability across Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

One of the club’s signature initiatives is a poultry project at the Evesham Methodist School valued at between seven and eight thousand dollars.

Delivering remarks during the public speaking finals held on Thursday, October 22, President of the Lions Club Saint Vincent South, Michael John, said the project involves the rearing of 100 chickens.

Mr. John stated: "The aim of that project is that when the birds are mature they will be able to sell them and do the cycle on their own. So that is why it is called a sustainable project. We also did something similar with the New Prospect Primary School where they had a pen already and we were able to supply them with the birds; we gave them seventy-five (75) birds and the full cycle of feeders as well. I want to take this opportunity to extend that to any other Primary School which is willing to take part in this program where the Lions Club is going to provide you up to one hundred (100) birds and the three cycles of feed, so that you can generate income and do the cycle on your own. So, that's our contribution to food security."

Mr. John also disclosed that, apart from the poultry initiative, the club is actively involved in tree-planting exercises.

He further added: "As we all know now, we have climate change and during the dry weather we know the challenges we have with water. So over the years we journeyed to the Montreal Watershed and by now we would have planted close to one thousand (1,000) trees because we were doing that for a number of years now. So the Club is very much involved in the community. We also assist the elderly and we also give supplies to Primary Schools as well. So it is not just Public Speaking when you see this yellow vest in your area; it is because we are doing work to help the needy."
